12-FEB-2002 03:16: A Fellow Traveler Comes Upon the Way
Gallagher sat on the bed of Room 311 of the Cloud Cuckoo Land Motel and stared vacantly into the distance. He reached around to his back pocket, removed his wallet, brought it forward and flipped it open to the middle. He gazed for a moment at the contents therein, then sighed deeply as he wiped a tear from one eye. A sudden knock on the door interrupted his moment of reflection and he quickly returned the wallet to his back pocket, cleared his throat, wiped at his eyes, and strode across the room to open the door.
A bellboy stood there in uniform. "Message for Apartment 311A," he said as he passed over an envelope. Gallagher fumbled in his pockets for a tip but the messenger abruptly turned on his heel and then vanished into the night. Gallagher stuck his head out of the doorway. He turned it one way and then the other, peering down the long corridor. There was no one to be seen. He shrugged, closed the door, and then climbed down the ladder to deliver the message.
Tess took the envelope and turned it over in her hands. "It doesn't say who it's from. Who brought it?"
Gallagher shrugged. "A messenger. He was here, and then," Gallagher snapped his fingers, "he was gone."
Tess shook the envelope and then held it up to her ear. "Maybe it's from my mother," she said as she slid a finger beneath the seal. She withdrew the message within and read aloud:
THE FIFTH CENTER IS CALLED VISUDDHI. VISUDDHI MEANS PURITY. CERTAINLY AFTER LOVE HAS HAPPENED THERE IS PURITY AND INNOCENCE---NEVER BEFORE IT. ONLY LOVE PURIFIES AND ONLY LOVE---NOTHING ELSE PURIFIES. EVEN THE UGLIEST PERSON IN LOVE BECOMES BEAUTIFUL. LOVE IS NECTAR. IT CLEANSES ALL POISONS. SO THE FIFTH CHAKRA IS CALLED VISUDDHI. VISUDDHI MEANS PURITY, ABSOLUTE PURITY. IT IS THE THROAT CENTER.
AND TANTRA SAYS: ONLY SPEAK WHEN YOU HAVE COME TO THE FIFTH CENTER VIA THE FOURTH---ONLY SPEAK THROUGH LOVE, OTHERWISE DON'T SPEAK. SPEAK THROUGH COMPASSION, OTHERWISE DON'T SPEAK! WHAT IS THE POINT OF SPEAKING? IF YOU HAVE COME THROUGH THE HEART AND HAVE HEARD GOD SPEAKING THERE OR GOD RUNNING THERE LIKE A WATERFALL, IF YOU HAVE HEARD THE SOUND OF GOD, THE SOUND OF ONE HAND CLAPPING, THEN YOU ARE ALLOWED TO SPEAK, THEN YOUR THROAT CENTRE CAN CONVEY THE MESSAGE, THEN SOMETHING CAN BE POURED EVEN INTO WORDS.
WHEN YOU HAVE IT, IT CAN BE POURED EVEN INTO WORDS.
YOU ALSO USE THE THROAT, BUT THAT IS NOT VISUDDHI. THAT CHAKRA IS COMPLETELY DEAD. WHEN THAT CHAKRA STARTS, YOUR WORDS HAVE HONEY IN THEM, THEN YOUR WORDS HAVE A FRAGRANCE, THEN YOUR WORDS HAVE A MUSIC TO THEM, A DANCE. THEN WHATSOEVER YOU SAY IS POETRY, WHATSOEVER YOU UTTER IS SHEER JOY.
THE FIFTH CHAKRA IS THE VISUDDHI CHAKRA. IT IS LOCATED IN THE THROAT. THE FIFTH BODY IS THE SPIRITUAL BODY. IT IS CONNECTED TO THE VISUDDHI CHAKRA.

She held the letter tight against her heart. "Gallagher," she said, "someone is helping me. The Universe has heard my calls."
